Ernie Els Swing: “The Big Easy”

November 26, 2007

els-swing.jpg

Everyone has a sone or something in their head before they tee off. For me, it’s a Konica Minolta Bizhub Swingvision movie from youtube from Ernie Els, which you can find over here. It’s not really the movie clip itself, it’s those commentators who are going through my mind. It makes me relax and focus before i tee off.

So my question to you is: “what goes on in your head before you tee off?”

Sunday Golf: Durbuy golf course, Belgium Ardenne mountains

November 25, 2007

durbuy.jpg

Today, we went to take a look at the 27 hole golf course of Durbuy in the Ardenne mountains in Belgium. From our home, it’s just a 2 hour drive, but the atmosphere was great. A lot of level changes, because of the mountains. The only thing missing was the sunshine. But an interesting golf course, with not many people today playing.

The golfcourse is part of the Dutch Burggolf company, where we are a member. So the membership brings us to another country, and much more challenges to play with.

Stay tuned for more reviews of this golf course.

Scotland Win their first Golf World Cup

November 25, 2007

Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren will take the World Cup back to the home of golf for the first time after beating the United States on the third hole of a sudden death playoff on Sunday. A fourth par of the day at the 18th proved enough for the Scots to defeat overnight leaders Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum, pick up a cheque for $800,000 each and make amends for their own playoff defeat by Germany last year.

“To come back after a playoff loss last year and win is superb, particularly as my playoff record is rubbish,” Montgomerie told reporters after finally getting his hands on the John Hopkins trophy at the ninth attempt.

The Americans had looked set for victory when the Scots twice found the sand on the first extra hole but Warren nailed a 12-foot putt for par and Slocum just missed a seven-foot birdie effort.

Slocum had successfully drained a birdie putt just two feet shorter at the same green to force the playoff, giving the Americans a five-under 67 to match the Scots, who had shot a superb six-under 66, on 25-under for the tournament.

Both teams missed long birdie efforts at the second extra hole before Weekley failed with a 15-footer when he was putting for par to keep the match alive.

The Americans, both making their debuts in the 54-year-old tournament, had led by a shot after all three previous rounds in their pursuit of a 24th World Cup victory for their country…

It’s the time of year again…

November 20, 2007

…when the days are short and the temperatures are getting cold.

Last weekend me and my wife experienced the effects of winter time. The sun was shining very strong during the day, but when the sun went away around 5.00 pm the temperatures dropped immediately! Still, better than rain!

Nike Slingshot 4D

November 20, 2007

nike_slingshot_4d.jpg

Progressive iron sets are all the rage. They come from the obvious, but belated, realization that a nine iron is not just a shorter four iron. Now in addition to varying loft and length, designers are repositioning weight, resizing soles and shifting offset to make each club as playable as possible.

When I started making clubs, the pro I worked with told me that in every set, there is one “favorite” club. That was the club where the length, loft, lie, swing weight, sole width and weight distribution came together perfectly. The goal of designers now is to make every club the “favorite” club.

The new Nike Slingback 3d Irons are a case in point. The slingback—which has been used in other successful Nike designs—is positioned differently in each club to create a specific ball flight. The long irons feature wider soles for a higher launch, while the soles on the short irons are thinner for greater control. Finally, progressive offset is designed to make each club as accurate as possible.

Saturday scorecard: 18 holes: +18

November 18, 2007

gendersteyn-clubhuis.jpgToday the weather was excellent. No wind only sunshine. Just about 7 degrees.

We went to the Gendersteyn golfcourse just 15 minutes from Belgium. We did 18 holes and we just made it before the sun went down. I tried my new Taylormade R7 golf bag for the long 18 holes and it’s a winner. Excellent bag, great balance. Tomorrow again?

PING G5 Review

November 15, 2007

ping.jpg

PING G5
Street Price: $220.
Specs: Six lofts (13, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 degrees).
KEY TECHNOLOGY: A large, stainless-steel head with a CG that moves progressively back as the woods get shorter to create the ideal trajectory for each club. The weight-saving 455 stainless-steel face is plasma-welded to the body.
PANELIST COMMENTS: “This is my favorite so far. I hit it straight and far. . . . It has a more user-friendly head shape on the golf course than its bigger brother.”
JUDGE’S VERDICT: The simple yet confidence-inspiring shape combined with a hot face are what make it great.
Hot: The half-moon alignment aid works.
Not: Why call the 11-wood an “L-wood”? It’s confusing.
A fairway wood with 5-iron loft could be a lifesaver.
