New nike irons use sumo geometry
October 30, 2007
Nike Golf, who pride themselves in being the pioneer in the development of innovative equipment through “the power of geometry”, has applied the same geometric science to its new game-improvement irons, the Nike SQ (SasQuatch) SUMO irons.
Designed using “the same ground-breaking technology behind the SUper MOment (SUMO) of Inertia” that has helped propel the American company into becoming a significant competitor in the club market, their “exciting new irons are an important extension to the company’s successful SQ SUMO family of drivers, the SUMO and the SUMO², they have announced.
As in all SQ SUMO products, “everything begins with geometry”, reports Nike Golf, whose trademark PowerBow weighting creates a high moment of inertia (MOI) by repositioning weight low and deep to enhance stability.
The MOI in the SQ SUMO irons is the science behind straight and long – producing higher, longer, straighter and softer landing shots.
The SQ SUMO irons, which are packed with forgiveness, feature a long blade length and a wide sole.
“We have taken the premise of geometry that we started with in the original Nike SQ driver and are evolving it across our club line,” Tom Stites, Director of Club Creation for Nike Golf, said this week.
“With this new geometry and its high MOI, we have created what we believe is the most forgiving iron Nike Golf has ever developed.”
A responsive ultra thin Cryo Steel face plate in its No 4 to 7 irons is welded around the perimeter of the clubhead to increase the coefficient of restitution (COR) across the face for greater distance and this serves to further amplify the forgiveness across the hitting surface.
By nature, a thin-face, extreme perimeter weighted golf club head has the potential to create a harsh feel.
For this very reason, the SQ SUMO irons include a TPU polymer insert to prevent unwanted vibrations at impact for an improved feel
The new sets of SUMO irons will become available at golf shops in the USA from November 1 and will be offered in sets comprising sizes 4 to AW for men (MSRP: steel $799.99; Graphite: $999.99) and sizes 5 to SW for women (MSRP: graphite only: $999.99)

Singapore: ls ‘can’t wait’
October 30, 2007
Ernie Els, his confidence boosted sky high by his sixth triumph at the HSBC World Match Play Championship “can’t wait to tee it up” in the Barclays Singapore Open at the Sentosa Golf Club this week.
“I’ve twice finished second there (to Australian No 1 Adam Scott) so obviously, I’m looking to put that right and go one better this time,” the big South African says in his latest reprt on his website this week
Els is feeling very relaxed after spending a week back home in South Africa “swimming with my two children and catching up with some old friends” and together with a putter that finally worked well again in his Wentworth triumph after a series of previous let downs this season, he believes he’ll go into the Singapore event at the top of his game
“To be honest, I’m still on a bit of a high after winning the HSBC a few weeks ago,” he says in his website report.
“My confidence is up. I’m ready to go. Basically, I can’t wait to tee it up. “confidence is up, I’m ready to go, and basically I can’t wait to tee it up again.”
Els narrowly lost out to Scott in a three-hole play-off last year after being beaten into second-place submission by all of seven shots 12 months previously.
Now he hopes to take his improving form there one step better by beating Scott.
Since the drama of his play-off with Scott, The Serapong course at Sentosa has since undergone a $12million facelift and Els expects it to present a tougher test this weekend.
“I like this golf course. And I can tell you it’s a pretty tough test,” he says.
“I mean Scotty was 13-under in 2005 and that was enough to win by seven shots. Then last year he and I were tied at 10-under in the final round when they abandoned play and sent us out to finish the tournament in a three-hole play-off.
“So you know, this course doesn’t give up a low score easily. It holds its own.
“And I guess with the changes they’ve made since we were last here, it could play maybe even a little bit tougher. We’ll see. I wouldn’t be unhappy if it did, though.
“I prefer golf courses that play tough and challenge every department of your game. That’s when I often play my best golf.”

Review: Callaway Big Bertha 460
October 26, 2007
The cannon is back!
Features: The BB 460 isn’t only powerful, it also has a Consistent Alignment Sole that helps the club rest square on the ground, a Variable Face Thickness design and an alignment stripe.
Advantages: The stretched head design allows the CG to be positioned low and away from the clubface, resulting in high-launch, low-spin drives. The BB 460 is compatible with Callaway’s OptiFit Weighting system, and it’s also equipped with a stock Aldila NVS graphite shaft.
Benefits: Everybody. The Big Bertha 460 is the best Big Bertha design yet.
What We Like: The distance and forgiveness are easy to like, but it’s the fast-looking cosmetics and alignment aids that make this a winner.

Clubhead: Titanium (cast)
Clubface: Titanium (forged)
Volume: 460cc
